The bell tent evolved from Henry Hopkins Sibley’s 1856 patent, which combine on the wind and rain resistance of Native American tipi and a single center pole design for easy set up and transport by the army. Short side walls were later added to the design giving the tent its characteristic bell shape, a new name, and more walk around room.
